Medicaid Budget: Public Input on FY 2012 $40 Million Budget Savings
Target
The Maryland Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene (DHMH), in collaboration with the Maryland Medicaid Advisory
Committee (MMAC), sought public input on strategies to save $40
million from the Medicaid budget during this fiscal year (FY 2012).
The MMAC is a group of providers, consumers, advocates, and
legislators who advise DHMH on Medicaid policies and programmatic
content. The Medicaid
budget includes a savings target of $40 million; however, there is
no specific guidance on how to save the $40 million and DHMH must
determine how to reach this savings target.
Interested individuals were encouraged to submit
ideas by email or verbally at two public hearings – one in Baltimore
City and the other in Annapolis.
The Department received over 190 cost containment
ideas. Roughly 20 ideas were identified as cost containment
initiatives that could generate savings during FY 2012, which can be
viewed by clicking here.
The other viable ideas are estimated to save money in later
years. These ideas will
be considered as the Department develops its FY 2013 budget and
plans for longer-term savings. All of the cost containment ideas can
be viewed by clicking
here.
The FY 2012 ideas will be discussed at the MMAC
meeting on Thursday, August 25th from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
at DHMH in Lobby Level Room 3.
