The Maryland Medicaid Drug
Utilization Review (DUR) Board has recommended that physicians
and nurse practitioners who provide pain management services consider
using pain management agreements with their patients. These
agreements serve to:
promote communication, clarify common
treatment issues and prevent misunderstandings;
emphasize that opiates are part of
comprehensive pain treatment programs;
stress the physician's
responsibility to work with the patient to improve his/her pain
symptoms.
